Lessons learned from teaching teenagers how to survive NYC

Published about 1 month ago • 2 min read

“Yup, 140 of us got on and off the subway – in one group!” I told the airport attendant at Laguardia as she asked me to (once again) tell the kids they needed to get against the wall so we could continue unloading the three charter buses.

Over Spring Break, I traveled with my son and his school’s entire orchestra and choir groups to chaperone a trip. They were performing at Carnegie Hall in NYC. 👀 🎼

It was a thrilling experience. Not only as a proud parent to watch my son play violin on one of the biggest music stages in the world. But to fulfill my childhood dream of going to the Big Apple.

But traveling in a group of 140 everywhere you go isn’t exactly my idea of a relaxing vacation.

There was lots of shouting at teenagers NOT to do teenage things. (I can still see the fear in this one girl’s eyes when I screamed at her to get off the subway platform. 🚇😠 That dead rat on the tracks wasn’t worth her life.)

But who knew how many kids wouldn’t understand city crosswalks or that the city buses WILL run you over! 🚌

There was also a strict daily itinerary from Point A to Point B in an orderly fashion…with 140 people. 🥴

Honestly, I’m just grateful I didn’t lose a kid.
Or lose my 💩 screaming at them!

It was close, though.

So, what does all of this have to do with podcasting or content?

Nothing, really.

Except you’ll likely hear lots of stories about New York come out in my content in the coming months. I kept my promise that I wouldn’t work on this trip, and batching content ahead played a huge role!

(BTW, there’s no way I could’ve worked! 🙅I was operating on such little sleep that by the third day, I was only planning my coffee breaks throughout the day!)

Which reminds me…when are YOU taking a break from your content this year?
Is that time on your calendar?
Have you planned how your content will work while you’re out of office?

Plan for these things now – yes, even the Holidays in the fall! – so you can reap the benefits of fully unplugging and enjoying life.

To Indulging in Time Off,

Krystal
